How Trade-Ins Work at Victorville Motors
How is my trade-in value determined?
Your appraisal starts with Kelley Blue Book data, then adjusts to your vehicle. From there, four things shape your offer: mileage, condition, installed options, and local demand for your vehicle. Condition includes dents and mechanical issues. A dealer inspection confirms the details before the offer is finalized.
How long is my offer good for?
A Kelley Blue Book Instant Cash Offer is valid for seven days from the date you receive it. After that you can submit a new request, though the amount may change. Once your vehicle has been inspected, you have one day to redeem the offer. If its condition changes or you add more than 50 miles after that inspection, the offer may be recalculated.
What should I bring to my appraisal?
Bring your vehicle’s title, the document California drivers often call the pink slip. If two owners are listed on that title with their names joined by “and,” California DMV rules require the signature of each owner before ownership can transfer. A slash between the names means the same thing. Still paying the vehicle off? That is routine. Bring your lender’s name and your account number so the remaining balance can be handled as part of the deal.
Why is a dealer offer different from a private-party price?
Kelley Blue Book publishes two different numbers for the same vehicle, and the gap between them is normal.
Trade-In Value
What a dealership can be expected to pay this week. We handle the paperwork and the title transfer. An inspection is required, and the offer holds for seven days.
Private Party Value
What an individual buyer might pay. You handle the listing, the meetings, and the DMV filing yourself, on your own timeline.

Does trading in reduce my sales tax in California?
No, and this is where California parts ways with much of the country. Most states tax only the difference between the new vehicle’s price and your trade-in allowance. California is one of the few that does not. The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration instructs dealers that the total selling price must still be reported when a trade-in is accepted. The trade-in allowance cannot be deducted from the taxable amount.
You do not lose the value of your trade, though. You simply receive it as buying power rather than as a tax reduction. Your equity works as a down payment. That lowers the amount you finance, which reduces both your monthly payment and the interest you pay over the life of the loan. Our payment calculator will show you what that looks like on a specific vehicle.
Can I use my trade toward a lease?
Yes. Federal leasing rules define a capitalized cost reduction as any net trade-in allowance, rebate, non-cash credit, or cash that reduces the gross capitalized cost. Subtract it and you arrive at the adjusted capitalized cost, which is the figure used to calculate your monthly payment. Bring that number down and the payment follows. If you owe more on your current vehicle than it is worth, that negative equity is added to the gross capitalized cost instead. The payment goes up rather than down.
