RAM 1500 Oil Type (2010-2026)

BLUE RAM 1500 REBEL

Quick answer: RAM 1500 oil specs vary by engine and model year. Most modern gas engines (2019+) use 0W-20 full synthetic, the High Output Hurricane requires 0W-40, and EcoDiesel models use 5W-40 diesel-specific oil. Capacities range from about 5 to 10.5 quarts. Find your year and engine in the table below.

This guide covers every engine offered in the RAM 1500 from 2010 through 2026 — the original 4th-generation lineup, the 5th-generation redesign with eTorque (2019), the 3.0L EcoDiesel (Gen 2 and Gen 3), the supercharged TRX (2021–2024), and the all-new 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo inline-six (2025+). Specs are sourced from current OEM and Mopar documentation. For complete model details on the 2026 RAM 1500, see the 2026 RAM 1500 overview.

3.0L EcoDiesel V6 (Gen 2) 2014–2019 10.5 qts 5W-40 full synthetic diesel MS-10902 / API CJ-4
3.0L EcoDiesel V6 (Gen 3) 2020–2023 8.5 qts 5W-40 full synthetic diesel MS-12991
3.0L Hurricane I6 (Standard Output) 2025–2026 7.5 qts 0W-20 full synthetic MS-6395, API SP
3.0L Hurricane I6 (High Output) 2025–2026 7.5 qts 0W-40 full synthetic MS-A0921, API SP

Note: Capacities include filter. The HO Hurricane uses 0W-40, not 0W-20, and Gen 2 vs. Gen 3 EcoDiesel use different oil specs that aren’t interchangeable. RAM 1500 Classic owners (DS body sold alongside the new DT, 2019–2024) should verify via oil fill cap or owner’s manual — Classic engines may have retained earlier viscosity specs.

A Quick Generation Tour

The 4th generation (DS body, 2010–2018) offered the 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 in the early years (both retired by 2013), the 5.7L HEMI throughout, the introduction of the 3.6L Pentastar V6 (2013), and the 3.0L EcoDiesel (2014). All gas engines used 5W-20. The 5th generation (DT body, 2019–2024) brought eTorque, the EcoDiesel Gen 3 redesign (2020), and the supercharged TRX (2021–2024). Pentastar moved to 0W-20 in 2019; HEMI followed in 2022. The 5th generation refresh (2025–2026) introduced the Hurricane I6 in two output levels, retired the EcoDiesel and TRX, and brought the HEMI back for 2026 by customer demand after a one-year hiatus.

3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 (2010–2013) — The Original 4th-Gen Engines

The early 4th-generation RAM 1500 offered two now-discontinued engines: the 3.7L V6 Magnum (215 hp) through 2012, and the 4.7L V8 PowerTech (310 hp) through 2013.

  • 3.7L V6: ~5 quarts, SAE 5W-20, MS-6395
  • 4.7L V8: ~6 quarts, SAE 5W-20, MS-6395

Conventional or synthetic oil meeting the spec was acceptable from the factory. For trucks now 12+ years old, full synthetic is the safer choice.

3.6L Pentastar V6 (2013–2026) — The Long-Running V6

The 3.6L Pentastar has been the standard V6 since 2013 and remains the standard V6 in the 2026 RAM 1500 at 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft. The eTorque mild-hybrid system was added in 2019 with the new DT body.

  • Capacity: ~5.9–6.0 quarts (with filter)
  • Viscosity: SAE 5W-20 full synthetic (2013–2018); SAE 0W-20 full synthetic (2019–2026, with eTorque)
  • OEM spec: Chrysler/FCA MS-6395

The 2019 viscosity shift to 0W-20 supports faster cold-start oil flow for the VVT/VVL systems and meets CAFE compliance. Do not back-date 5W-20 into a 2019+ Pentastar.

5.7L HEMI V8 (2010–2024 + 2026 Return) — The Returning Heavy Hitter

The HEMI is the longest-running engine in the RAM 1500 — 2010 through 2024, sitting out 2025, returning for 2026 (eTorque-only) at 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft.

  • Capacity: 6.9 quarts (≈7, with filter)
  • Viscosity: SAE 5W-20 (2010–2021); SAE 0W-20 full synthetic (2022–2024, 2026)
  • OEM spec: Chrysler/FCA MS-6395

The 2022 transition from 5W-20 to 0W-20 was for CAFE compliance — the bearing clearances and VVT solenoids in 2022+ HEMIs are calibrated for 0W-20.

6.2L Supercharged HEMI V8 / TRX (2021–2024) — The Performance Outlier

The TRX produced 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque from a supercharged 6.2L V8 — the most powerful production half-ton of its era. Discontinued after 2024; replaced by the RHO with the High Output Hurricane.

  • 2021–2024: 7.5 quarts, SAE 0W-40 full synthetic, MS-12633

The TRX’s MS-12633 spec is unique to the supercharged engine — not interchangeable with the standard MS-6395 of the naturally aspirated HEMI. If you own a TRX, verify your oil meets MS-12633 or use Mopar-branded oil approved for the TRX.

3.0L EcoDiesel V6 (2014–2023) — Two Generations, Two Specs

The EcoDiesel was offered across two generations with substantially different oil requirements. Discontinued after 2023.

  • 2014–2019 (Gen 2): 10.5 quarts, SAE 5W-40 full synthetic diesel, MS-10902 / API CJ-4
  • 2020–2023 (Gen 3): 8.5 quarts, SAE 5W-40 full synthetic diesel, MS-12991

Critical: Gen 2 and Gen 3 use different specs. Using the wrong one between generations can cause turbocharger deposits and engine damage.

Historical note: The original Gen 2 spec was 5W-30 (MS-11106). RAM TSB 18-078-16 updated all Gen 2 EcoDiesels to 5W-40 (MS-10902 / API CJ-4) — including retroactively for trucks built before June 2016.

3.0L Hurricane Twin-Turbo I6 (2025–2026) — The New Volume Engine

The Hurricane replaced the HEMI as the primary RAM 1500 engine for 2025. It comes in two output levels with different oil specifications.

Standard Output: 420 horsepower, 469 lb-ft.

  • 7.5 quarts, SAE 0W-20 full synthetic, MS-6395, API SP

High Output: 540 horsepower, 521 lb-ft. The most powerful engine ever offered in a RAM 1500.

  • 7.5 quarts, SAE 0W-40 full synthetic, MS-A0921, API SP

The HO uses 0W-40 — not 0W-20 — and a different OEM spec. They are not interchangeable. Confirm which Hurricane you have before each oil change.

Synthetic Oil Required for Modern RAM 1500s

All RAM 1500 engines from 2013 onward require full synthetic oil to meet OEM specification and maintain warranty coverage. Conventional oil is not approved for any 2013+ RAM 1500. The Variable Valve Timing systems, eTorque integration, twin-turbocharger heat loads, and tight cold-start tolerances all depend on synthetic’s flow characteristics, oxidation resistance, and additive stability — especially in the High Desert climate around Victorville.

OEM Standards, Filters, and Brand Choices

RAM specifies oil by spec code and viscosity, not brand. Any oil meeting both works. Current standards: API SP (or newer) and ILSAC GF-6 for gasoline engines. Diesel and supercharged engines use vehicle-specific specs (MS-12991, MS-12633, MS-A0921).

Brands meeting RAM specs include Mopar Genuine Motor Oil (sold under the MaxPro line, factory-formulated), Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, Shell Helix, Mobil 1 Extended Performance, Castrol EDGE, and Valvoline Advanced Full Synthetic. Pair with a Mopar OEM oil filter — generic filters can restrict flow or lose efficiency over the change interval.

Oil Care for High Desert Driving

The Mojave Desert environment around Victorville, Hesperia, Apple Valley, and Adelanto is harder on engine oil than most U.S. climates. Dust, heat, and temperature swings accelerate oxidation and shorten oil life.

Watch the Oil Life Monitor (OLM), not the odometer. Modern RAM 1500s adjust service intervals based on actual driving conditions. The 10,000-mile maximum is for ideal conditions — High Desert driving will trigger service earlier.

Check oil level monthly. Desert heat increases evaporation. Pull the dipstick, especially after towing or running highway miles through Cajon Pass.

Don’t delay service once the OLM has called for change. This applies to drivers across the broader Victor Valley, including those coming in from Phelan.
